POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Graduate Student Life Officer supports the development and implementation of programs that promote the outreach, recruitment, academic success, and graduation of graduate students who enhance the diversity of the University of California, Santa Barbaras graduate programs. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of the Graduate Division, this position works collaboratively with campus leadership, academic departments, student organizations, and campus partners to support the evolving needs of UCSBs diverse graduate student community.

The Graduate Student Life Officer provides information and guidance to prospective graduate students on academic preparation, the admissions process, and program options that align with their academic and professional goals. This position contributes to UCSBs graduate diversity efforts by assisting with recruitment activities, supporting academic and social programming, fostering student communities and networks, and facilitating mentoring opportunities.

Additionally, the Graduate Student Life Officer helps develop strategies to support undergraduate programs that prepare diverse students for graduate study. This position helps organize and manage summer research programs designed to introduce undergraduate students—particularly those from the California State University system—to graduate education at UCSB, with the goal of increasing future graduate enrollment.

The Graduate Student Life Officer plays an active role in developing programs that support graduate student engagement, community-building, and belonging. Through these efforts, this role helps promote a positive graduate student experience, strengthen connections among diverse student populations, and respond to emerging issues affecting graduate student life. This position supports UCSBs commitment to inclusive excellence and contributes to fostering an environment where graduate students can thrive academically, professionally, and personally.

Primary duties Supports the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs that address the unique needs of underrepresented and underserved graduate students.

Assists in developing and coordinating retention programming for students from non-traditional graduate populations, such as introductory graduate education courses, summer bridge programs, and community-building activities, while working within established budgets.

Contributes to the development of resources and activities that promote graduate school readiness for undergraduate students at UC Santa Barbara, with guidance from Graduate Division leadership.

Provides input and supports advocacy efforts to ensure graduate student needs are considered in campus and systemwide committees, as directed.

Collaborates with campus partners, including Student Affairs, to help ensure graduate student needs related to housing, health, wellness, community-building, and campus engagement are communicated and considered.

Serves as a liaison to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (VCDEI), helping coordinate the Graduate Divisions diversity-related programs with broader campus DEI initiatives.

Coordinates communication and event support with graduate student organizations—such as the Graduate Student Association (GSA), Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA), Queer & Trans Graduate Student Union (QTGSU), Asian Pacific Islander Graduate Student Alliance (APIGSA), American Indian Graduate Student Alliance (AIGSA), SACNAS, and Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE)—to promote engagement and ensure diverse student needs are considered.

Collaborates with the Graduate Divisions Admissions, Outreach, and Diversity (AOD) team to support outreach strategies aimed at increasing competitive applications and enrollment from underrepresented groups.

Advises prospective applicants on academic preparation, the graduate admissions process, and program fit based on individual goals, connecting them with appropriate campus resources.

Represents UC Santa Barbaras graduate programs at outreach and recruitment events, providing information and answering questions about program offerings, admissions, and student life.

Assists the Graduate Divisions AOD team in maintaining campus partnerships by supporting outreach and recruitment efforts, sharing best practices, and facilitating collaboration with departmental outreach staff.

Advises graduate students on mentorship resources and opportunities and works to encourage the development of meaningful mentoring relationships within the campus community to support academic, professional, and personal success.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Masters degree in in related area

Preferred qualifications

• Knowledge of all relevant university policies and procedures.

• Demonstrates ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels in the diverse and multicultural environment of the university.

• Demonstrates a high level of political and organizational acumen.

• Possesses skills to gather, organize, and perform advanced analysis on diverse and complex diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and initiatives, to present findings and to develop and present recommendations that are significant to the organization.

• Provides written analyses and oral presentations to management.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills and experience with public speaking.
